In the grey dawn, the landing craft carrying assault elements of two US divisions, as well as sappers from the Engineers and the Rangers, advanced towards the beach, the objective which had been assigned to them. Its codename: Omaha Beach. Exhausted by the crossing and sub- ject to bouts of sea sickness, the assault troops were convinced that the German defences had been crushed by the naval and air bombardment. In front of them, entrenched in the coastal fortifications which they were still setting up just the day before, German infantrymen were nonetheless waiting for the American soldiers to reach the shore before opening fire. 06.30. This book gives the reader the opportunity to discover this page from History. The first part gives the units on both sides, and reviews the German defensive positions in detail. In the second part, the book evokes the assault waves coming in one after the other, follows step by strep the difficult advance of the GIs on the beach under a deluge of fire, in the middle of anti-landing obstacles and above all, it retraces in words and pictures all the violence and the horror of the fighting.
A great classic. The first part is devoted the German and American units with a precise plan of each posi- tion. The second part describes that terrible day of June 6, 1944.
