THE ARTILLERY OF THE WIKING
This new book will enable us to get a better, more detailed insight into the history of the Wiking’s artillery regiment, thanks to the numerous accounts and memoirs from veterans of the unit, which backed up all the division’s operations with its barrages. One of its first commanders, Herbert Otto Gille even became Kommandeur of the Wiking.
Very arduous training got these men to use all the various guns and howitzers economically, firing their ammunition accurately since lack of supplies had become the major recurrent problem for frontline troops. The reader will be impressed by the accounts of the different episodes in what was one of the most terrible battlegrounds, the Eastern Front, formidable because of the Russian enemy but also because of those other terrible adversaries, the cold and the mud.
