From the beachhead in the sector of Ste-Mère-Église and Utah Beach, the Americans crossed the Merderet at the Chaussée de la Fière, taking Picauville on 10 June. The advance slowed down with the failure of the 90th Infantry Division, then Pont-l’Abbé was captured on the 12th and Saint- Sauveur-le-Vicomte on the 16th.
Two days later they cut off the Cotentin peninsula on a level with Barneville and then headed north towards Cherbourg.
